Sweet Soumada drink from the bay of Mirabello.
Surrounding the bay of Mirabello, the bay on which Agios Nicolaos is situated, besides the ‘normal’ olive trees, you will also find a lot of almond-trees. They are the light green, fluffy trees. Parts of the almond tree are used to create a syrup that is mixed with cold water in summer and warm water in winter. This local drink is called ‘Soumada’.
It tastes a bit like marzipan and is a drink to be served at weddings. The thought behind it is to wish the newly weds a sweet life, as sweet as the drink itself.
Strangely enough this drink is also drunk at funerals of young people that have never been married. Here it symbolizes the sweet life in heaven.
