Matala and the hippie caves.
According to the legend, Matala is where Zeus came on shore with the queen’s daughter, Europe. At the same time Matala is the place where Gortys and Festos had their harbour.
But Matala is mostly known for the caves in the cliffs on the east side of the beach. Most likely these caves where already used for accommodation in the stone age, but became famous in the 60’s and 70’s when the hippies made them their residence during a holiday on Crete.
