Kastelli on Crete.

If you drive through Crete, it can hit you that you enter the village or town of Kastelli more than once. In total there are seven Kastellis on the island, only they are spelled and pronounced differently. So you can read on a map the village ‘Tsifout Kastelli’, but on the island there is also a Kasteliana, Kastellos or Kastellákia. The biggest village Kastelli lies in the bay of Kissamos in the region of Chania. The Kastelli near the beach resort Hersonissos maybe will become more known in the future, because there are plans to build a new airport there.

You would probably guess that the word ‘Kastelli’, comes from ‘Castle’. This is exactly what it was in the past; a castle with a settlement built around it. Some of these cities remained a city, but others became smaller villages.
